After doing many newborn photography sessions we have realised that most parents didn’t really understand what the art of newborn photography involves and what level of service we, at Cotswold Fine Photos, provide. So I hope that this article helps you to understand why we love what we do so much.
Newborn baby photography has been popular for decades. It first became popular in the USA thanks to the photographer Anne Geddes. You might recall her calendars that were all the rage in the 90’s. Since then its appeal has grown and spread as far and wide as Brazil and Australia. Now parents the world over love the timeless beauty of newborn photography and the passion for it in the UK is steadily growing.
We have many years of experience and continually invest in training and equipment to ensure that we can offer our clients the very best work possible. We are fully insured and I have recently attended a Paediatric First Aid course with the British Red Cross.
We don’t travel light. We bring the studio to you in the comfort of your own home so that you don’t have to think about anything. We’re happy if you want to cosy up on your sofa in your pyjamas, catch up on social media or watch some tv. We’ll even put the kettle on. We quite understand that most of you might not want to leave the house with your week old baby just yet.
We bring all our equipment and expertise in to your home along with a carefully thought out plan regarding poses, props, colours and textures. There will be a selection of blankets, headbands and soft fluffy hats. Then, once we’ve got the room up to temperature (around 28C), we will get baby undressed and ask you to give them a top up feed so that they are all set for their photoshoot.
It is important that baby is still very young and sleepy so that it is possible to get those squishy pose. There is nothing more adorable than a sleepy, curled up baby photograph.
It is not enough to simply pick up a camera and snap away without any professional training or experience at handling a young baby. With a subject as small and fragile as a newborn baby it is essential that newborn photographers are professionally trained and also insured to ensure the safety of your baby at all times.
Newborn baby clothes are usually way too big and hide away the beauty and the features of a newborn baby. Therefore we try and have little, soft pieces of material that don’t cover the whole body or we pose them wearing nothing at all. Depending on how sleepy the baby is and how they take to the different poses a session can last anywhere from 2 to 4 hours. This allows plenty of time for swaddling, soothing, feeding and cleaning. All the things that will keep baby happy and we will progress at their speed, not ours. We won’t insist on any poses the baby is not happy with.
Most parents also want to be in some of the pictures with their baby as well. We absolutely love capturing the bonding of mummy and daddy with their newborn baby and we totally recommend it as your baby will never be this tiny again.
Once we have taken all the photos all we need is to pack up and leave you in peace. We then carefully edit the photos to finish making the art that we love to create. Within 3 weeks we will return to show you the final gallery of photos and to talk you through the products that we offer. There is no hard sell. We are there to guide you on the way to your purchase of a piece of art to cherish for a lifetime.
We then order the products that you have chosen and they are delivered to us so that we can check that they are perfect. Once we are happy we will visit you one final time (for now) to ensure that they arrive with you and your family safely.
We hope you have enjoyed reading about what we do for a living. Feel free to comment, like and share. If you are expecting a little one or already have one of your own and would like some photos like these please visit our newborn photography section or contact us here.
